Elaine Robbins (Laynee)
Why did you become a DJ?
Because from an early age I was obsessed with dance music beats & I loved the way DJs blended the tunes together. I always counted beats in my head & payed attention to their mixing. I knew what I wanted to do. It was a natural progression for me.

I was influenced by 80’s electronic dance music. I loved the Pet Shop Boys & also more underground sounds like KLF

My first 2 raves. One in the Navan exhibition centre For Ultra Sonic & the other in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght for N-Trance & Nikolai way back in the mid 90s.
What song is your favorite party starter?
I like to start off slowly so something housey like Helicopter- On ya way. But it depends what kind night it is.
The song you thought you would never play!
The Vengaboys- Up & Down. But I was working in Cocos at the time so I forgive myself.
Your most embarrassing DJ moment….
Playing Vengaboys lol. Or when you mess up a mix in front of a crowd. That can throw your confidence a bit.
What is your favorite place to DJ?
The Mezz in Temple Bar was great. The decks, sound & lighting was perfect.
What is the biggest event you have ever done?
I have 2 pretty big gigs coming up in August. One is with Lisa Pin Up in Ennis & the other is Judge Jules in the Voodoo Lounge. I’ll be upstairs in the oldskool room.

It used to be San Transisco back in the 90s but nowadays I change all the time when I rediscover old tunes like Castle Trancelott- Indoctrinate or Dharma Bums- Wrong is right.
Who is your favorite music artist or band?
The Prodigy I’ve liked since the beginning. They were way ahead of their time. I like new bands like Years & Years now & other dance bands who can cut it live.

Spin1038 for the charty dance. Phever, NRG & Heat for underground dance
What is your nationality?
How old are you?
How did you get started as a DJ?
When I got a decent enough wage in a job I ordered a set of Soundlab belt drive decks. I saw them advertised in the back pages of a dance magazine. There was no internet back then (’98) so I rang the number & sent a postal order over. I remember the first 2 tunes I mixed were Moonman- Don’t be afraid & Disco Citizens- Footprint.
What are your favorite clubs past and present?
My locals Club Sarah & Cocos were great for dance music but The Temple Theatre was the best for the music & atmosphere. Spirit was also great on Abbey St.
What are your favorite styles of music?
I like a mixture of genres from the 90’s; House, Hard House, Techno, Hardcore, Trance & Psy Trance.
What clubs have you played in?
I’ve played in The Mezz Temple Bar Dublin, The Venue Kildare, Coco’s nightclub Dublin & The Voodoo Lounge Dublin. I’ve played at a lot of pub venues too over the years.
Preferred format of music, cd’s, mp3’s, controller, laptop, vinyl and why?
Vinyl is my favourite because of it’s simplicity. You just play the record & mix another in. I use CDJs too. I like the way you can put hundreds of tunes on to a memory stick. Not so bad for my back.
