Name * Simon Berry
Why did you become a DJ?
It was a natural progression from being so involved with the scene from the beginning of the nineties. I loved the music and I enjoyed collecting records.
What or who is your favorite musical influence?
Growing up in the eighties I enjoyed listening to hip-hop and electro stuff, and I liked the more electronic bands such as New Order and Depeche Mode so when house music and techno came along that was me sold.
What is your most memorable event?
Too many memorable nights had over the years to narrow it down just to one! Ones I have a clear memory of anyway! Probably attending some of the nights at Wigan Pier between 1990-94 and some of the warehouse parties I have been fortunate enough to attend, just for the underground DIY feel to them.
What song is your favorite party starter?
Depends on the buzz in the place.
The song you thought you would never play!
I did spin an Ace Of Base track once, can’t remember the name of it now. It was an Armand Van Helden remix but even so haha!
Your most embarrassing DJ moment…
Finding another DJ going through my records in the booth swapping his copy of Cleptomaniacs – Positive Feedback for mine as his had a hash burn on it. Not embarrassing for me too much, very awkward moment though!
what is your favorite place to DJ?
Anywhere that has a good crowd that like their music!
What is the biggest event you have ever done?
Most venues I have played would have been around the 500 capacity mark. Nothing too major.
Do you have a DJ idol?
I wouldn’t follow particular DJs too much but two that I rate very highly from back in the day would be DJ Welly and DJ Nipper.
What is your personal favorite song?
Too many to choose from it would be too difficult to narrow down to just one.
Who is your favorite music artist or band?
The Stone Roses.
What is your favorite radio station?
I’d have to say UDMI!
What is your nationality?
I have both Irish and British passports so all bases covered haha!
How old are you?
Old enough to know better.
How did you get started as a DJ?
I was 15 years of age and got a set of Soundlab belt drives and a Kam mixer and away I went.
What are your favorite clubs past and present?
I have been fortunate enough to attend some amazing clubs over the years. The Hacienda, Wigan Pier, Angels, Bowlers and nights like Back to Basics, Hard Times, Cream, Golden, etc. The list would be fairly endless. Since being in Ireland, I really enjoy Republik in Waterford and have had many a good night at various venues in Dublin.
What are your favorite styles of music?
Mainly House both classic and contemporary. I’m very open to different genres and will play anything from Disco, Italo, Techno, Acid to Breakbeat it just depends on the mood.
What clubs have you played in?
I have been fortunate enough to work with good venues and promoters in the Northwest of England who have had DJs like Stu Allan, Nipper, Mark Archer, Matt Bell, etc on.
Preferred format of music, cd’s, mp3’s, controller, laptop, vinyl and why? Vinyl, the original and the best!
